Property and Application of Antistatic Agent for Powder Coating

Abstract: This paper gives a general description to the antistatic agent and its application, focus on the improvements to powder coatings by functional antistatic agent ( researched by Zhihua Chemical )
 
0 Forewords:
The ground mass of powder coating are always epoxy resin, polyester resin, acrylic resin and other polymer that not contain conductivity, which own high volume resistivity, and it is uneasy to eliminate adverse impacts caused by accumulated electrostatic charge in processing occasions. To avoid powder coatings’ electrostatic hazards, we can add antistatic agent in process of production. This paper focuses on the applications of antistatic agent.
 
 
1. Antistatic agent for powder coating and its application
 
Antistatic agents are mainly single compound or compound by non-ionic, ionic surface active agent. The working principle is to use hydrophilic group absorbing water in air to form electrophilic membrane or reply on proton transfer to reduce surface resistance. There are two kinds of antistatic agents for powder coating as followed:
One is aliphatic compound, white powder coating with melting point 67-70℃, white powder, through exchange of proton that charges transferred. With dosage about 0.3 wt of total powder, it can change resistivity of coating surface, e.g.: Lubrizol 308 antistatic agent for powder coating.
 
The other is antistatic agent Quaternary ammonium that has property of heat resistance, that is ionic surface-active agent, white or slight yellow powder, utilizing water vapor absorbed from coating surface by hydrophilic group to form electrophilic layer or relay on proton’s transfer to reduce surface resistance, with dosage 0.5-1.0% wt of total powder, e.g.: 711 antistatic agent for powder coating.
  K-300 Zhihua Brand is compounded by the above components; it has a better leveling, impact resistance, adhesion and other comprehensive performances of powder additives.
 
 
2. Usages of antistatic agent K-300 Zhihua Brand:
Antistatic agent K-300 Zhihua Brand has followed functional as common antistatic agents:
1. Avoid electrostatic dust in air adsorbed on the products
2. Avoid negative effects caused by electrostatic in process of production, e.g.: unequal distribution of attachments
3. Arouse ionization, afire, powder’s explosion or other accidents.
It also has below functions:
1. Own comprehensive properties of internal & external anti-static.
2 Obtain good compatibility with suitable resin. If the compatibility too high that will lead slow transference for antistatic agent on surface, then it is hard to form antistatic layer. Otherwise, with the low compatibility, a quick transference for antistatic agent on surface, then it do harm to the surface appearance.
3. Permanent property of anti-static
4. It has functions to modifier, enhance the flowing, and improve imprinting of the coating surface.
 
 
Technical Specification for K-300 Antistatic Agent Zhihua Brand:
Appearance: white powder
Activity: ≥95%
Volatile material: ≤0.15%
Decomposition temperature: ≥300℃
 
 
We adopt the common formula as table 1, by adjusting the dosage of K-300, using surface resistance tester to measure surface resistance, we also measure other properties of coating surface, and we can see from the results from tables that the effects of K-300 antistatic agent on powder coating:

3.      Summary:
We can conclude: antistatic agent is a necessary additive in powder coating, K-300 antistatic agent Zhihua Brand has outstanding advantageous in application to powder coating, it has long-lasting antistatic effect, also it can improve the coating surface performance, in total it is a novel and effective multi-functional antistatic agent.
